Open Fires and Stoves

Always make sure you maintain your open fire or stove to decrease your risk of chimney fire.

The main points to remember if you have an open fire or stove is to:

Keep chimneys and flues clean – make sure your chimney is swept regularly according to the type of fuel you use

  • smokeless fuels, at least once a year

  • bituminous coal at least twice a year

  • wood quarterly when in use

  • oil once a year

  • gas once a year

Never stop the air supply by blocking air vents or air bricks

Make sure that your fire is out before going to bed or leaving the house

Ensure that you have a working smoke alarm fitted to each floor of your house and test it regularly.
